The value of one-on-one instruction

The New York Times, Monday, October 11, 2010:
In an article about the Gates Foundation and technology in higher education, Steve Lohr concludes that tutoring is the top tool for academic improvement. “To date, education research shows that good teachers matter a lot, class size may be less important than once thought, and NOTHING IMPROVES STUDENT PERFORMANCE AS MUCH AS ONE-ON-ONE HUMAN TUTORING."

Certificate in Project Management Progam

Originating as a collaborative effort between Successful Projects and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Small Business Development Center, and now being offered in other universities throughout the system, this innovative and flexible Certificate in Project Management Program is on the forefront of individualized course construction.  This program takes the time to get to know the student participant and then prescribing the best project management course for them because "one size does not fit all".

This program is based on a skills assessment/evaluation from the participant, the participant's team members, project sponsors, and direct management. The assessment helps to identify project management-related skill gaps that, when filled, will help position the participant for success.

Following the assessment, the program instructor works with the participant to select the best matchng instructor and the specific learning activities that they are motivated to use, and that will fill the skill gaps identified at the assessment stage. So if the participant dislikes group activities, they don't have to do any. If the participant likes listening to Podcasts on an MP3 player, they can do that. If the participant is a voracious reader, they can do a lot of reading activities.  The instructor will create a customized syllabus and work with the participant directly throughout the program.

Instructors in this program are contracted through Successful Projects and they are PMP-certified and experieneced in both project management instruction and they have significant real-world project management experience. They also are technology savy so if the sessions are best held via Skype, web conference, or by using computer screen sharing... the technology tools are always options.

In 2007 we were posed with the question, "If you were able to design the Project Management course of your dreams, what would it be like?".  Here were our answers:

  1. Fit it to my schedule including the need to start when I’m ready (not on a dictated semester calendar) and take breaks when my life gets too busy
  2. Let me pick from a pool of credentialed instructors who have experience in varied fields – and who know their stuff and are great teachers.
  3. Let me work virtually, but with personal help and individual attention
  4. Give me a custom course design – project management is a broad field and some parts of it are just not as important to me as others
  5. Have the learning activities fit my personal learning style preferences
  6. Run it through a college with a good reputation so that it will look good on my resume

And this became the vision for our Certificate in Project Management program. And we're proud to say we think the vision and the actual implementation are perfectly aligned.

The Participant Experience

Here are the steps you will experience in the process:

  1. Program registration through the University Small Business Development Center.
  2. Phone interview with the program lead to to assist in the instructor match and discuss the progam.
  3. Assessment (see the assessment here)
    • You determine what team members, managers, customers or project sponsors, or vendors you would like feedback from and you forward the survey request to them.
    • You fill out the survey for yourself. This usually takes about 30 minutes.
  4. You will be sent a project management workbook and a Project Risk board game (at no additional cost to you).
  5. An online learning portal is created for you.
  6. Kick off session with your instructor (60 - 90 minutes)
    • Review your survey results with particular attention to the noted gaps
    • You explain your learning activity preferences
    • The instructor makes learning activity recommendations and the two of you agree upon your customized syllabus.
  7. You order your selected learning materials (such as textbooks, podcasts, and other resources) and begin your learning activities. This usually takes about 10 hours.
  8. Session 2: You and the instructor have a session to review your learning activities and provide coaching. (60 - 90 minutes)
  9. You continue with your learning activities. This usually takes about 10 hours.

Quotes from Students about the UW Certificate in Project Management

"You have filled in my knowledge gaps in project management and have inspired my critical thinking."

Brian Jostad, Sept. 2011

Instructed by Amy Gau

"I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful experience that I had with Kay Wais and Successful Projects. I started the program in December and just finished it yesterday. Kay has been my teacher in my Certified Project Management program during the winter/spring period of the 2009-2010 school years. Kay came well prepared to give me an outstanding educational experience. In this capacity she was consistent, passionate, and reliable. While teachers are not required to spend dozens of hours with students, Kay had clocked more hours than was ever promised and she is still willing to meet with me and consult me in the future on any project management needs. This speaks volumes to Kay’s experience with me further evidencing her dedication to the teaching profession. This enthusiasm and philosophy of hard work did not wane after she began and even though the certification is now complete, she continues.

When Kay started to teach me, it was immediately evident that she had a love for the project management profession and a sincere interest in and concern for me as a student. She was willing to come up with creative lessons that proved to be interesting and educationally effective. Furthermore, she spent many hours with me on individual instruction.

I would certainly recommend Kay Wais and Successful Projects to anyone that wants to seek their Project Management Certification. The high level of educational expertise, lifelong experience with project management, and the passion for teaching, makes Kay and excellent teacher and I would certainly recommend her to anyone."

"I wanted to let you know that I just completed the Project Management Certificate program with Kay Wais from Successful Projects.  This self-paced program was great.  The tools and resources Kay provided me with through this program will be so helpful in planning successful projects in the future.  It has already helped me with time management and communication.  I am now more aware of the type of work I need to do with my clients, stakeholders, and team members.  I would highly recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in project management or a job that requires them to frequently manage projects.  The tips and tricks provided in the program will save you a great deal of time and headaches by giving you the tools needed to properly and successfully manage those projects.  I have even found that it helps me with planning in my personal life.  Recently I was planning a small anniversary get together and I found myself using project management skills to coordinate the food and party preparations.   It was refreshing to find that I wasn’t scrambling at the last minute to get everything done because I had so thoroughly planned.  Thank you for providing this opportunity!"

"The discussions with Kay made the coursework tangible and directly applicable to a multi-year project I am managing at Trane. I would absolutely recommend the UW-La Crosse Project Management Certificate Program to others without hesitation. "

Sean Smith, PE, project leader, Trane

"Kay also worked with me to customize the course based on my specific needs and professional goals. The self- and peer-assessment that kicks off the program was very enlightening. I learned so much. Every business should send their employees through this certificate program because it provides a flexible project management toolkit that can be applied to reduce costs and improve success. "

Finnian Cullen, Clinical Systems Analyst, Franciscan Skemp Healthcare

"The program was 100% customized and helped me improve the project management skills important to me and the work I'm doing every day. The one-on-one coaching sessions with Kay were excellent. She showed me how to specifically apply what I learned to situations at Riverfront which made this program very valuable."

Ann McDonlald, finance director, Riverfront Inc.
